De Tomaso has a number of models to its name but nothing says “De Tomaso” quite like its most popular model, the Pantera. Debuting in Modena in March 1970, it was sold in the U.S. between 1971 and 1974 and was the joint effort of Ford and De Tomaso to replace the Shelby Cobra and rival the Chevrolet Corvette and Ferrari Dino. The Pantera was to be instrumental in propelling De Tomaso from eccentric, niche producer to a fully-fledged, high-volume supercar brand. But more than this, it also challenged the car conventions of the day with its striking looks, unibody construction, mid-engine layout, American V8 performance and relatively affordable price tag. With a wide and low stance, a nose that curves towards the ground in a graceful arch from the heavily-slanted windscreen, and quad exhausts, there is no denying the Pantera’s Italian good looks.
