Not be mistaken for the standard E90 320 M Sport as the 320si has a rather unique pedigree that is unknown to many and enthusiasts alike. First announced by BMW in 2005 the 320Si was a Limited Edition saloon required to homologate the engine so it could be campaigned in the World Touring Car Championship in 2006. In 2005 the 320i had won the championship in European touring cars, but BMW wanted to improve it for the global stage. To do so required making a minimum number of road cars, thus the 320Si was born. BMW tried to keep the car secret . Therefore they Limited the build of the 320si Homologation Edition to just 2,600 worldwide including 500 right hand drive cars that were built to be released and marketed in the UK, all of which were soon snapped up by those in the know. At the heart of the Si was a specially built 1,997cc four cylinder engine. The bore was increased and the stroke reduced to help it rev. With peak power being produced at 7,000rpm with a redline at 8,000rpm this was no ordinary four pot! The standard 2 litre's Valvetronic was ditched in favour of conventional overhead cams and bigger valves, and aluminium alloy cylinder liners were used. The cylinder head was cast in the F1 engine plant and the compression was upped to 11.0:1 from 10.5. The engine featured a carbon fibre cam cover and shorter final drive. The M-Sport package was included as standard, plus the Aerodynamic package with modified bumpers, sills and aluminium interior trim with M Sport badges. The 18 inch multi-spoke wheels were the same as those on BMW's WTC racing car, and were 8 inches wide on the front and 8 1/2 on the rear. ,
