Peugeot Cars History & Background
Peugeot Cars

Peugeot is a French car manufacturer. The Peugeot brand is part of PSA Peugeot Citroen the second largest car manufacturer in Europe.

In 1882, Peugeot first produced wheeled vehicles by way of bicycles designed by Armand Peugeot. Armand developed an interest in designing automobiles and in 1889, produced the company’s first car, a three-wheeled steam-powered car.

In 1890, petrol-fueled internal combustion engines were introduced into the automotive world along with the concept of four-wheeled cars. Peugeot was the first manufacturer to develop a petrol-powered car fitted with rubber tires.

In 1896, Peugeot developed their first in-house engine, and in 1903 Peugeot developed their first motorcycle.

During World War I, the company focused on arms production for the war and produced a wide range of war products. After the war, the company focused once again on producing cars. This time Peugeot focused on manufacturing cars designed more for the masses and less on cars designed strictly for the wealthy.

In 1974, Peugeot bought a 30 percent share of Citroen, and in 1975 took over the company completely. The joint company became PSA Peugeot Citroen. The company then went on a few years later and acquired Chrysler of Europe.

Peugeot PSA has been known in the past for developing bargain vehicles while sacrificing style. More recent years have seen a shift in this trend and many of the company’s styling problems have been corrected.

In April 2006, PSA Peugeot Citroen announced the closing of a large facility located in Coventry, England. The closure resulted in thousands of lost jobs.
