The History of Volvo

Volvo Cars

Volvo is a Swedish car manufacturer that was originally founded in 1927. Volvo Cars is a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company. In 1927 the company was originally founded by SKF. The first trademark Volvo was registered in 1915 by SKF with the intention of using the trademark for a special series of ball bearings. It was not until 1927 that the trademark would be used in reference to an automobile.

In 1927, the company produced the first Volvo automobile; the Volvo OV 4. The Volvo symbol is actually a chemistry sign for iron. The iron sign is used to reference the strength of the iron used by Volvo. Sweden is well-known for the strength and quality of its iron.

Volvo’s history and cars themselves reflect the importance that Volvo has placed on safety through the years. In 1944 laminated glass was used, in 1959 the three-point seatbelt was standard issue on all Volvo models. In 1956, Volvo began padding all their dashboards for safety reasons, and in the 1960s Volvo developed the first rearward facing child-seat. Through the years Volvo has led the way for other brands with their innovative safety technology.

In the 1970s Volvo acquired the Dutch company DAF and went on to market the Volvo 340 which became one of the biggest selling cars in the 1980s in the United Kingdom.

In 1998, Volvo sold its automobile manufacturing division to the Ford Automotive Group. Now, the name is used by two separate groups for two different purposes. Volvo is a Swedish owned manufacturing company that produces commercial vehicles. Volvo Cars is a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company and produces automobiles in its Premier Automotive Group. Some popular models include the C70, S40, S60, S80, V50, V70, XC70, and the XC90.
