Land Rover is a British manufacturer that produces all-terrain vehicles and sport-utility vehicles. Maurice Wilks designed the first Land Rover in 1947 and the first civilian Land Rover in 1948. Land Rover has changed owners several times through the years and is well-known for producing quality four-wheel drive vehicles.

In 1947, Wilks created the first Land Rover based on an American World War II Jeep. Early Land Rovers were marketed strictly for military purposes but were later produced for civilian use.

In 1967 Rover became a part of Leyland Motors and later British Leyland. In 1970, the company introduced the Land Rover. In 1986, British Leyland became known as the Rover Group and was privatized. The Rover Group then became part of British Aerospace. In 1994, the Rover Group was taken over by BMW and in 2000; BMW splits up the Rover Group and sells Land Rover to Ford.

Land Rovers are revered for their longevity and ability to withstand even the toughest conditions. Land Rovers have been designed for military use since its inception but civilian counterparts have been introduced with great success.

Land Rover faces competitive challenges from Japanese 4X4s in many regions of the world. In recent years Land Rover has lost a good portion of its sales to Japanese manufacturers. Even in Britain some industries have opted to use less expensive and equally competent Japanese models.

In 2005, Land Rover was the most profitable branch of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group. Land Rover has introduced several popular models in recent years including the Land Rover Discovery, Freelander, and the new Range Rover.

The Land Rover Discovery is a mid-size off-roader. The Discovery is a four-wheel drive vehicle that has been produced in three generations. Production of the Discovery began in 1989 and continues to date. The Discovery has proven to be one of the most popular vehicles produced by Land Rover. The car is produced in both three and five-door form and comes with a wide range of engine choices.

The Land Rover Freelander is a compact cross-over 4X4. The Freelander has been produced for two generations and comes either as a two-door SUV or a four-door SUV. The Freelander comes with a V6 2.5-litre engine and was produced from 1996 to 2006.

The Land Rover Range Rover is a full size luxury off-roader. The luxury four-wheel drive SUV was first introduced in 1970 and was produced as a five-door SUV. The Range Rover is available in three generations and is currently still in production.
