The XF is an attempt at a new kind of Jaguar – one that is forward looking rather than influenced by the past.

As such it is looking to entice executives who have previously bought German executive saloons and are after something different from the offerings Jaguar has previously relied on.

So the XF is designed to make an instant impression both outside where the styling is contemporary, and inside where wood, leather and aluminium are used in fresh ways that look far more appealing than in Jags gone by.

Firing up the beast via a pulsing ‘start’ button sees the transmission’s rotary gear selector rising from the centre console, while four dash-mounted air vents rotate to the open position. If that doesn’t impress the neighbours I don’t know what will.

Out on the open road is where the XF belongs as its lithe, grippy chassis makes it as at home on twisting mountain roads as it is on a bog standard motorway.

The steering is excellent giving great feedback to the driver while the ride is a touch firmer than usual for a Jaguar – but not uncomfortably so.

The S-Type is capable of reaching 60mph in just over eight seconds. The car produces enough power to keep even the most demanding driver entertained. The S-Type is very comfortable at cruising speeds and during long distance trips.

The Jaguar S-Type could technically be used as a family car because it provides adequate space, but the car was not really designed to be kid friendly. The interior will not do well with the abuse that children and families dish-out.

The S-Type will not be a practical first car for many new drivers. It is attractive but it comes with a high ticket price and insurance rates will be high as well. Not to mention the S-Type may be too powerful for a novice driver.

In any other market sector Jaguar would be far ahead of the competition, but in its class it has to compete with several big names and even with all that the S-Type has to offer competition is still steep.

While not an out-right sports car the XK's still provides an excellent driving experience. The light, all-aluminium body forms a solid basis and combines with perfectly weighted steering. The automatic transmission complete with steering wheel-mounted paddles allows the driver to be more involved when the urge arises. Overall the Jaguar XK provides a terrific and rewarding driving experience.

The XK was not meant to be a family car in any sense of the word. It might be used as a second car, but not as a primary means of transportation for a family.

The XK would also not make a good first car either. It is an expensive purchase with high running costs and really high insurance rates especially for novice drivers. Not to mention that the car provides way too much power for a newly licensed driver and may not be the safest choice of first cars even if you could afford the car and insurance.

The XK is doing much to redeem Jaguars old image for building beautiful and classy cars that are fast and fun to drive. The car may seem a bit too feminine for some.
