The Cadillac Escalade is going to be a tricky sell when it comes to the environment. The giant SUV has predictably lamentable fuel economy figures, achieving just 17mpg even when your right foot is kept in check.

may not be too chuffed about mum and dad’s choice of transport as they grow up with greenhouse gasses choking the atmosphere.

However, if you love bling and want celebrity status then this SUV offers both in spades. The V8 engine also emits a beautiful sound when the pedal hits the metal.

Much of the Escalade’s appeal is in its surface glitter. Dig a bit deeper though and you’ll discover materials in the cabin lack a touch of class. Build quality isn’t exactly inspiring either as some of the fittings feel flimsy and driving on rougher roads provokes a noisy response as the chassis is shaken and stirred.

The traditional face of a Cadillac is grafted on to the front of the Escalade which sports a cheese-grater grille and upright headlamps.

The Cadillac BLS delivers a nice ride, especially at higher speeds. Comfort and class take priority in the interior cabin. Under the bonnet the diesel and petrol V6 engines are the best options available.

The Cadillac BLS would make an excellent family car with lots of frills and comfort. The cabin is spacious enough to accommodate a growing family, yet the variety of engine choices make it fuel friendly, and cost effective. The boot is a good size too and can carry a good deal of cargo that accompanies an active family life style.

Even given the car’s smaller size it wouldn’t be a good first car. Newly licensed drivers would probably want a sportier car, one that is a little less expensive with a less mature image.

The BLS Cadillac is a different car than the Cadillacs of the past. It is smaller, stylish, and more economical appealing to more buyers. The BLS is not short on comfort even though the premium compact is not as large as traditional Cadillacs. It does lack the expensive quality feel in the cabin that was the order of the day for past generations.

The Cadillac XLR provides a good driving experience and provides plenty of power. The car handles well but the steering lacks a little something. The car’s sturdy build is obvious and other than the inferior quality of the cabin the car provides an excellent ride.

The XLR could be a good second car to a family. It would provide lots of fun for young and old alike. The car would not make a good primary verhicle due to the lack of cabin and passengers space and limited boot space, especially when the top is down.

The XLR would probably not be a good first car. It’s too expensive and running costs will be too high. Insurance will also be high and novice drivers may have a difficult time parking the XLR. There are definitely more affordable, better first cars available.

The XLR would be a fine addition to the Cadillac fleet if the interior lived up to the quality of the car’s exterior design. The car feels well built and should be reliable and fun to drive.
