Mitsubishi Cars History & Background
Mitsubishi Cars

The Mitsubishi Group is a large group of individually owned Japanese companies who use the Mitsubishi name. The companies are independently owned and operated.

The first Mitsubishi company was a ship building firm with other entities being added through the years. During the Second World War, Mitsubishi manufactured aircraft designed to help Japan in their war efforts. After the war, the company returned to manufacturing automobiles.

By the 1970s the company’s sales began to grow when the company increased its exports to wealthy foreign countries such as the United States and Europe. In the 1980s Mitsubishi was able to acquire Chrysler’s Australian manufacturing division.

In 1988, Mitsubishi Motors went public and Chrysler acquired over 20 percent. This allowed Mitsubishi to get out from under a good deal of the debt that the company had acquired. Since 1988, Mitsubishi has seen its fair share of ups and downs including economic down turns and public scandals. Mitsubishi’s Australian plant has suffered economic losses as early as 2005.

The introduction of new models coupled with the success of current models could be enough to turn the firm around. Popular Mitsubishi models include the Mitsubishi Colt, Lancer, Outlander, Shogun, the Shogun Sport and the Grandis.
