BMW, A Brief History

BMW Cars

BMW or Bavarian Motor Works is a German car and motorcycle manufacturer. BMW parented MINI, Rolls-Royce and Rover. The company’s headquarters are located in Munich, Germany and was founded in 1913 by Karl Friedrich Rapp.

BMW’s are easily recognizable by the brand’s blue and white roundel. The roundel initially symbolized the blue and white checkered flag of Bavaria. Through the years the symbol has come to be recognized as a spinning white propeller on a blue sky.

In 1917 the company was taken over by Austrian Franz Joseph Popp and was renamed BMW AG in 1918. After World War II the production of aircraft was strictly prohibited in Germany. BMW then began manufacturing railway brakes and in 1923 the company produced its first motorcycle.

The company’s factories were heavily bombed during the war and after the war the company was banned from manufacturing for three years. The Munich factory started producing again in 1952, and the factory in Eisenach had been taken over by the Soviets during the war and began producing BMWs under Soviet control. In 1951, the Eisenach Company was forced to halt production of all trade marked material belonging to the Bavarian company. The Eisenacher Motor Werke Company then branded their cars EMW and continued producing cars until 1955.

In 1952, the Bavarian company produced their first passenger car. In the years to follow the company faced many hardships, but partial owner Herbert Quandt managed to turn the company around by introducing several new models, and by 1963 the company was strong and productive once more.

Throughout the 1960s the company enjoyed great success and in 1972 produced the 5 Series. The 5 Series was only the first in a long line of successful cars that followed. The company began production in various countries including the United States and Britain. Several cars have led to the company’s success in more recent years. These cars include the 3 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, the BMW X3, the BMW X5, the BMW Z4 and the BMW 1 Series.

The BMW 5 Series is a mid-size luxury car designed to replace the smaller New Class sedans. The car is available in four-door sedan or wagon form. There are five generations of 5 Series and they are identified according to their chassis numbers. The car was first produced in 1972 and production continues to the present.

The BMW 3 Series is a compact executive car that was produced from 1975 to the present and is BMW’s best-selling car. The BMW 3 Series includes the BMW E21 that was produced from 1975 to 1983, the E30 that was produced from 1984 to 1994, the E36 that was produced from 1992 to 1998, the E46 that was produced from 1999 to 2005, the E90 that was produced from 2006 to the present, the E91 that was produced from 2006 to the present, the E92 that is scheduled to begin production in 2007 and the E93 that is scheduled for production in 2008.

The BMW 1 Series is a small family car with rear wheel drive. The 1 Series replaced the 3 Series. Since its introduction the 1 Series has become one of BMW’s best-selling cars. The car’s production began in 2004 and continues to date.

The BMW 6Series is available with a 4.8-litre V8 or the 3.0 R6. The M6 is the performance model in the 6Series. The 6Series replaces the BMW E9 and is available in two-door convertible or coupe form. The New 6Series was introduced in 2003 with a 4.4-litre V8 engine. The car was first produced from 1976-1989 and then again from 2003 to the present.

The BMW 7Series is a full-size luxury car that shares the same engine line-up as its 5Series equivalent. The 760i and 760Li come with a 6.0-litre V12. The Li also comes in bullet proof form for additional protection. The 7Series replaced the ‘New Six’ models. The four-door sedan is available on two platforms; standard-wheelbase and extended-wheelbase. Updates for the 7Series are predicted in 2007.

The BMW X3 is a compact SUV with car-like handling. The X3 offers plenty of versatility but doesn’t deliver true off-roading capabilities. The car has been enhanced several times to improve handling and ride quality. The X3 was first produced in 2003 and production continues to date with enhancements scheduled for 2007.

The BMW X5 is BMW’s first SUV. The X5 is a five-door crossover SUV with all wheel drive. The X5 comes with an impressive line of V8 petrol engines with a diesel engine option. The X5 received enhancements in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The X5 was first produced in 2000 and continues to date.

The BMW Z4 is a two-seater that comes in roadster or coupe form. The Z4 replaced the Z3 and comes with rear-wheel drive. The Z4 M Roadster and the Z4 M Coupe were introduced in 2006 and deliver up to 343bhp. The Z4 is fast and sleek with a luxurious and sporty feel.

BMW is a major high-end competitor within the automobile market. The company’s confidence in their product is evident even with the company’s tagline ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’.
