Background
The original Volkswagen Golf was put into production in 1974 and was known as the Volkswagen Golf Mk1 it has since received a bunch of updates which have kept the model competitive throughout.
The Mk1 had been produced for 9 years before the Mk2 version hit production in 1983. The Mk3 was produced from 1991 to 1999 with the Mk4 being produced from 1997 to 2004. The Mk5 had a short run from 2003 to 2009 and now we have the Mk6.
The Mk6 is pretty much the same as the Mk5 being built on the same chassis yet it has improved suspension and has also been made to reduce noise in the cabin. If you are trying to save a bit of money then it may be worthwhile getting the Mk5 version.
There are also 2 electric versions the blue-e-motion which was introduced in 2011 and the Golf Variant Twin Drive which is expected to arrive in 2015.
