Toyota RAV 4 Overview
The current RAV4 comes in two different forms: as either a short- or a long-wheelbase model. There are six different engines to choose from ranging from a 2.0L four-pot to a 3.5L V6.
The RAV4 is a very popular model in its class; it’s good to drive, has good all-round capabilities and looks great.
Background
The first RAV4 hit the production lines in 1994 and lasted six years until 2000. It offered a choice of two engines and came as with either front wheel or all-wheel drive. There was also an electric version of the RAV4 made available from 1997 to 2003 for fleet lease.
The second generation model was launched in 2000 and could be purchased in both 3 and 5 door forms, and there was a choice of three different engines including a diesel option. In 2004 the second generation RAV4 was updated before being replaced in 2005 by the third generation RAV4.
Since its introduction in 2005, the third generation RAV4 has received two facelifts - one in 2008 which included a re-designed front and rear end as well as some new features, and one in 2011, which was purely aesthetic.
There is also a battery electric version of the third generation RAV4 expected.
Summary
The RAV4 is a very good all-rounder which is capable of some pretty intense off-roading, but doesn’t look out of place on the morning school run.
