SSangyong Cars
As with most automobile manufacturers, SSangyong has undergone many changes throughout their history. The company was initially founded in 1954 as Hadonghwan Motor Company Korea. The company built jeeps for the United States Army in its early years and later moved on to produce special purpose vehicles. In 1977 the group's name was changed to Dong-A Motor and in the early 1980s they acquired Keowha, an SUV maker, and began concentrating their efforts solely on producing SUVs. Subsequently, Dong-A was taken over by Ssangyong Business Group in 1988 who then partnered with Daimler-Benz for engine technology.
With the help of Mercedes, Ssangyong built the Musso in 1993 and the Korando in 1996. The popularity of these vehicles opened up the global market for SSangyong. The company quickly became known as industry experts in the production of 4 X 4's. After a brief ownership by the now bankrupt Daiwoo, they were purchased by SAIC, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, and with the help of Mercedes have developed their first passenger car, the Chairman Luxurious Saloon Car.
