Renault Koleos

The Renault Koleos is the French firm’s first ever off-roader. It puts together Renault design with engineering from Nissan and the car is built at a Samsung factory. It may be classified as a Sports Utility Vehicle, but the emphasis is very much on practicality rather than speed.

Renault Koleos Car Review Summary

The Renault Koleos is focused on being a comfortable family car, with the added benefit of four-wheel drive. It is aimed at those looking for something a bit different from a family hatchback who want the ability to handle rougher terrain when necessary.
The Koleos is available with a smooth diesel engine and features lots of practical touches. There are two engine options – 148bhp or 173bhp 2.0-litre diesels. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard whichever you choose, but the 148bhp car is also available with an automatic transmission if desired.
The engine performs the remarkable feat of keeping what is a relatively big car going surprisingly quickly. As long as the revs are above 2000rpm a slight press on the accelerator is enough to increase speed without having to change gear. Drive the Koleos for any length of time and the flexibility of its power unit is much welcomed.

The Renault Koleos is also one of the best in its class for practicality. The driving position is good, with the extra height giving great visibility particularly when driving in town.
Decent amounts of space up front is repeated in the back. Sit a third adult in the middle of the rear seats though and things are a bit tighter, while the folding trays on the back of the front seats eat into the available knee room.
The boot’s a good shape and there are a number of nice touches that impress including cubbies in the cabin floor. There is also a split tailgate which features an upper glass hatch and a drop-down lower door giving a platform to perch on. This means it is only necessary to lift the rear screen to drop in smaller items.
Another good idea is a single handle in the boot that drops each part of the 60/40 split rear seat to leave a flat boot floor when you need more space for that flat-packed wardrobe.
The Koleos is unlike some other cars in the SUV sector in that function, rather than fun, seems to have been the watchword for its developers.
The cabin uses smart materials and everything feels solidly screwed together.
The four-wheel drive versions of the Koleos are capable off-roaders as the SUV benefits from expertise gleaned from the Nissan X-Trail. However if 4x4 style without the 4x4 is all that’s required, the two-wheel version of Koleos is available.

Life Style

Rating: 4/5

The Reanult Koleos is for those who want something other than a sporty drive. A more leisurely pace needs to be adopted as the strong pull of the diesel engine hauls the SUV around.
That said the Koleos is not boring to drive as it’s secure and sure-footed in the bends, but a lack of feel through the steering and a certain amount of body roll soon discourage throwing the Koleos into corners. The light steering is a bonus though in the urban jungle – especially when parking.
The comfortable ride is a treat on long journeys as the Koleos also offers excellent refinement with wind and road noise kept to an absolute minimum. There are also comfortable seats and a cabin where spending time is anything but a chore.
The Koleos exterior is for those who like their 4x4 to blend into the background as it’s not as in-your-face or sharp edged as some competitors.
Both versions of the Koleos average less than 40mpg, fall into road tax band F and sit in a comparatively high company car tax bracket – so although it is cheaper than some of its major competitors it is relatively expensive to run.
As far as the environment goes, the lowest level of emissions and best fuel economy from a Koleos are found on the two-wheel drive version. However, it still emits 191g/km of carbon dioxide and can’t better 40mpg, which doesn’t compare well with even four-wheel drive rivals.

Security and Safety

Rating: 4/5

There is an impressive array of standard security kit including deadlocks, an alarm, locking wheel nuts and a stereo that’s integrated into the dashboard.
Renault ensure that every Koleos comes with twin front, side and curtain airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounting points. The entry-level model though lacks stability control.

The Finishing Touches

Rating: 4/5

The Renault Koleos is available in three different trims. The entry-level Dynamique model is fitted with alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control and an MP3-compatible CD player. Upgrade to the Dynamique S and climate control, keyless entry and rear parking sensors are added as well as stability control as standard. The range-topping Privilege trim brings heated leather seats, satellite-navigation, a panoramic sunroof and a BOSE sound system to the party.
