Car Review

Proton Gen-2

The Gen-2 is inepensive and feels cheap. It does come with an impressive warranty and a nice-looking exterior design. Other than that the car holds no bragging rights.

The company has created a bargain vehicle and has not taken great pains to disguise the really cheap nature of the car. Only the seriously strapped for cash buyer would opt for the Proton Gen-2.

Proton Gen 2 Car Review Summary

Proton Gen-2

Proton's Gen-2 is aimed at bargain basement buyers. The Proton is inexpensive, and uses a much cheaper quality of materials. Some models offer good levels of kit, but this car offers only the bare minimum for transportation and comfort.

Protons are have a reputation as cheap cars geared towards bargain seeking buyers. The Gen-2 is no different. The firm has given the car a more European style, but the car is still made of cheap materials in order to keep the price of the car down.

Proton’s Gen-2 may be a little too cheap. Well known competitors have managed to manufacture viable automobiles for similar prices that are of much better quality. The competitor’s superior products are sure to put a damper on Gen-2 sales.

The Gen-2 has an attractive exterior design, but the interior is not as attractive. Proton does try to make up for the disappointing cabin materials with good levels of standard equipment. Unfortunately Proton is still out-shined by the competition.

Despite the Protons affordability and the company’s reputation for reliability the car is neither fun or enjoyable in any way. The car does come with an excellent mechanical warranty, but that may not be enough to seriously get buyers attention.

Despite Proton Gen-2 low asking price, buyers can find better quality cars for the same price or less. The car come’s with a six year warranty and insurance premiums should be low as well. The car’s resale value will also be on the low side.

The Gen-2 provides adequate passenger space, but boot space is limited. Various storage compartments help out a little, but this car definitely wasn’t designed for carrying cargo.

The Proton Gen-2 offers plenty of controls and features, but the plastics feel cheap and don’t feel very durable. Even the steeringwheel controls feel cheap and flimsy.

It will be difficult for some passengers to get comfortable. The car’s seats offer little support, and the cabin doesn’t do a very good job of suppressing wind, road, and tyre noise.

Being such a small car accessibility will be difficult for some less limber and larger passengers. The doors open wide enough but the compact size of the car makes accessing and egressing the cabin a little tricky.

The Proton Gen-2 turning circle lacks something to be desired. That said, the car is easy to park due to its small size, but steering can complicate matters. Rear visibility is somewhat limited but the car comes standard with parking sensors.

Proton Gen-2 handling and driving capabilities are not exceptional. They are just barely average. The transmission is even worse, and the car’s 1.6-litre engine is thirsty. This car is not one that you purchase for the driving experience.

This is definitely not a family car. It is much too small. The boot is also small and limited on what it can hold. This is not a practical choice for a primary family vehicle.

This would be an excellent first car. It is inexpensive to buy, it enjoys low running costs and is durable. Insurance rates will be low, and the car should be relatively inexpensive to repair.

Proton’s warranties say a little something about the reliability of their automobiles. The car’s engines and mechanics should hold up fine, it’s the interior that will probably not wear as well. Proton is seen as a manufacturer of inexpensive cars. The challenge will be for the company to manufacture inexpensive cars without making them so cheap that they aren’t desirable

Security and Safety

Rating: 3/5

The Proton Gen-2 comes equipped with a multi-function alarm and an engine immobiliser. Visible VIN plates are also included. This is not likely to be a target of car theft.

The Proton Gen-2’s safety features include twin airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, child locks, Isofix anchors and side-impact protection. Only GSX models receive ABS and EBD.

The Finishing Touches

Rating: 3/5

The Proton Gen-2 standard audio unit includes a CD player and radio. A 10-disc changer is available on higher models. The sound quality is good on the standard unit.

'Angel Blue' and 'Energy Orange' are very flattering on the car’s exterior. The bright colours add a touch of fun.The car’s cabin is less festive however thanks to the dull beige plastic used, the good news is that other colours are available.
