There was a slump in sales of gas-guzzlers due to the oil shortage caused by the Suez Crisis in 1956. Leonard Lord, head of BMC, British Motor Corp., wanted to create a more economical vehicle in order to fight this problem. The ADO 15, Austin Drawing Office Project 15, was created. Designed by Alec Issigonis, the Mini was sold under both the Austin and Morris names by 1959. Due to the popularity of these cars, thought of as a fashion or lifestyle statement, Mini became an established brand of its own by 1967.
Through the years the Mini has undergone many changes in design as well as several owners. The 1980s were particularly rough on the brand and it struggled for survival. They began to design special anniversary editions that were able to sustain the company until 2000, and then BMW decided to reintroduce the Mini in 2001. The new Mini is nothing like its original design but reviews have been very favorable. The thrill of driving the new Mini is similar to the older models but the newer models are much better for long distance driving.

The new BMW Mini is a small car that was designed to replace the popular Minis that were produced from 1959 to 2000. The newest version was introduced in 2001. Through the years Minis have been produced in four forms; as a two-door estate, two-door saloon, two-door van or as a two-door truck.
