Maserati Cars

In 1926 Diatto suspended production of their racing cars leaving Alfieri, Bindo, and Ernesto Maserti out of work. It was at this time that they, along with three other brothers, founded Maserati in Bologna, Italy. One of Maserati's first models, the Tipo 26, came out that same year and wad driven by Alfieri Maserati and went on to win a prestigious open-road endurance race, the Targa Florio. For the next 30 years Maserati claimed over 500 wins and many more class victories in races all over the world including two at the Indianapolis 500. In 1957 Maserati retired from racing and directed their focus toward road cars.

Through the years the company went through many changes. In 1968 they were sold to Citroen and later bankrupted in 1975, being kept afloat by funding from the Italian government until being sold to Fiat in 1993. Fiat then sold half of Maserati to their biggest competitor, Ferrari, in 1997, who then took full control in 1999. The company has since separated from Ferrari and is once again run by Fiat due to a failed deal between Fiat and General Motors. Despite its inconsistent ownership, Maserati continues to manufacture high performance, high quality automobiles that are sought after by race enthusiasts.
