Land Rover Freelander Overview
The cabin feels very classy and comfortable. The Freelander provides all-wheel drive and traction control systems, instrumental in providing that excellent off-road experience.
The Freelander has a premium quality feel and a good build quality. The model’s price is a direct reflection of that quality, although it is still competitive with rival brands.
The Freelander’s standard audio unit includes a stereo and CD player combination, and the unit boasts excellent sound quality. Several extra cost options are available including a sat-nav system.
Background
The first generation was produced between 1997 and 2006, with variations that included 3-door convertible and 5-door models. The Land Rover Freelander interior features premium quality materials and the company has paid close attention to detail.
The model was available with a range of engines and a 5-speed transmission (automatic or manual).
The Freelander 2, which has been in production since 2007, is larger in size than its predecessor and has an all-round more premium feel. As well as a bigger cabin space and a 6-speed transmission system, the Freelander 2 has a more attractive asking price without sacrificing performance.
The Freelander 2 comes with a 6-speed transmission and is available with a 3.2 litre engine. It has improved quality interior with more safety features as standard. The model features a modified version of the Terrain Response off-road driving system as fitted to the Discovery 3 and the Range Rover.
The Freelander TD4_e is the first 4x4 in Britain with stop-start technology to improve fuel economy and reduce carbon emissions. The system cuts out the engine when the vehicle is stationary, neutral is selected and the clutch engaged; the engine restarts when the clutch pedal is depressed.
In 2011, the Freelander was made available with the option of 2 wheel drive (badged as eD4). This version also lost Terrain Response and Hill Descent Control.
Summary
The Land Rover Freelander is a stylish 4x4 that delivers class, comfort and quality. The model makes for a good family car and works brilliant off-road as well as on.
