Chevrolet

In 1910, William Durant, the founder of General Motors, was forced out of the company. He wanted to rebuild his reputation in the industry, so together with Swiss racecar driver, Louis Chevrolet, they began their own automotive venture. On November 3, 1911, Chevrolet was created. Incredibly enough, in only five years Chevrolet was profitable enough to allow Durant to buy majority shares in General Motors. By 1917 he was back as president of GM and Chevrolet was merged into the company. Chevrolet went on to become the best selling and best known brand of GM. Chevrolet has been sold around the world under other brand names assumed by General Motors such as Opel, Vauxhall, and Daewoo.
Recent years have brought financial hardship with rising costs and slumping sales. To counter this, Chevrolet is in the process of restructuring itself. Besides closing factories and downsizing its workforce, the company also plans on offering innovative new features on upcoming models. They are also planning on reintroducing one of their most popular models after seven years absence in the market, the Camaro. The popular muscle car ended production in 2002 but will reappear in 2009.

Chevrolet Cars History and Background

Chevrolet

Chevrolet is a brand of cars that is currently produced by General Motors or GM. Chevrolet is General Motors’ best-selling brand and is recognized globally. Chevrolet has enjoyed great success both inside the United States and outside as well.

Chevrolet was originally founded by Louis Chevrolet and his partner William C. Durant. In 1916 Chevrolet had become successful enough to purchase the majority of shares in GM. In 1917 Durant became acting president of General Motors and Chevrolet then became an independent division of General Motors.

In the years to follow Chevrolet became widely known as ‘Chevy’ and produced a wide variety of cars from hotrods to large work trucks. The Chevy brand was very successful enjoying high-sales volumes both within the United States and in other countries as well.

Until 2005, Chevrolet only sold a few models in Europe, but in 2005 all of the Daewoo models were rebranded and reverted back to being Chevrolets. The name is being associated more and more with the vast line of cars that were branded under various names and sold outside of the United States. Chevrolet has begun a campaign to make the wide array of cars produced under other names known to all as Chevrolet.

Chevrolet represents quality vehicles from small to large that are offered at a wide range of prices. Some popular models that are currently being sold in Europe include the Kalos, the Lacetti, the Tacuma and the Matiz.

The Daewoo Kalos is a subcompact car manufactured by General Motors. The original Daewoo Kalos replaced the Daewoo Lanos. The Kalos comes in three forms; the three-door hatchback, the five-door hatchback and the four-door sedan. The Kalos is equipped with a 1.6-litre engine. In 2005 the Daewoo brand was dropped and the car was renamed the Chevrolet Kalos. In 2006, the T250 sedan is to be labeled the Chevrolet Aveo and will replace the Kalos. The Kalos was first produced in 2003 and production continues to date.

The Chevrolet Lacetti is a compact car that is manufactured in South Korea by GM Daewoo, a subsidiary of the American company General Motors. The Lacetti comes in three forms; a four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback and a four-door station wagon. In 2004 the Lacetti was renamed in Europe and the car took on its American name ‘Chevrolet’. The car offers a choice between three 4-cylinder petrol engines. The Lacetti was first produced in 2003 and production continues to date.

The Chevrolet Tacuma is a compact MPV that was initially labeled with the Daewoo brand but has since taken on the Chevrolet badge. The car comes with two engine options the 1.6-litre or the 2.0-litre. The Tacuma can comfortably seat five. The Daewoo Tacuma was first produced in 2000 and production continues to date.

The Chevrolet Matiz is a city car that was designed to replace the Daewoo Tico. The car comes with a 0.8-litre engine and functions well within the city but it doesn’t fair so well on more challenging terrain. The Chevrolet Matiz was first produced in 1998 and production continues to date.

Chevrolet manufactures cars all over the world. The cars are often branded with suitable names depending on the region (Asia, Europe, USA, etc.). Chevrolet has begun a trend of renaming its cars in some regions and giving them the ‘Chevy’ badge.
