BMW M6
The BMW M6 is styled to perfection offering Formula One technology in a package that combines an exclusive image with dynamic performance.
BMW M6 Car Review Summary
The BMW M6 is a dream machine boasting a 507bhp, V10 5.0-litre engine that is the most powerful normally aspirated and highest revving power unit ever produced by the German motor manufacturer.
As a result of radical dieting - through the use of an aluminium front end to the chassis, some aluminium and lightweight panels and a carbon fibre roof section - BMW ensure the M6 is actually 75kg lighter than the mechanically identical M5 saloon stablemate.
Everything on the M6 is hi-tech – an example being the revised electronics that help optimise the sophisticated seven-speed gearbox.
The upshot of all this effort is a car that can go toe to toe with the quickest around, accelerating from rest to 60mph in 4.6 seconds thanks to an F1-style launch control.
The M6 is a two-plus-two that can alternate between GT or sports coupe depending on your mood although room in the rear is restricted.
Practicality
Getting behind the wheel of this beast is one of the ultimate motoring experiences. Once there you’ll find a decent driving position easy to find as a range of adjustment accommodates virtually all shapes and sizes.
However the M6 is less practical when it comes to more mundane things like parking as judging the front and rear of the car in tight manoeuvres takes a bit of getting used to.
The iDrive rotary control that works the climate, stereo, navigation and phone systems is also an acquired taste for those used to simple buttons and dials.
The M6 offers a cabin that is well finished and well designed, but the low sporty lines do eat into available space - particularly in the back where children are the only viable passengers as legroom is insufficient for normal-sized adults even on short trips. The boot though does take two sets of golf clubs or enough luggage to justify its grand tourer status.
The BMW M6 boasts eleven transmission programmes and even the traction control limits are adjustable to ensure the car is set up to your driving tastes.
The steering and suspension also adjust to the driver’s style as the car is constantly monitored by a clever series of sensors.
Running costs are inevitably high for the BMW M6 as its powerful engine is a thirsty animal. Insurance and servicing costs are similarly high, but if you’ve the money to afford the M6 the cash to keep it on the road will probably not be a problem.
Life Style
The BMW M6 is a real driver’s car where you really do not want the journey to end. It is the sort of motor where you can drive all day and still feel pretty fresh when you stop for the night.
But it is no one-trick pony as it can also offer a scintillating drive on twisting country roads with colossal levels of grip, neat and accurate steering and an engine that’s just begging to be let loose.
The BMW M6 goes some way to justifying its expensive price-tag with neat ideas such as a multi-functional head-up display of the type pioneered on jet fighters.
The typical M6 buyer is likely to be a successful male businessman who is younger than the usual 6 Series owner profile and probably already indulging his penchant for distinctive cars.
Whoever buys it they are going to appreciate the M6’s composure as there is never a sign of it approaching any limits and few drivers will ever come close to reaching the edge of the envelope on this car.
The styling is sleek and handsome from all angles and the BMW M6 will turn heads wherever it goes.
Considering the figures posted by some of its rivals the M6 isn’t too bad when it comes to the environment, although if you want green you’re best looking elsewhere.
Security and Safety
BMW has an excellent security record and the M6 is well kitted out with a plethora of kit to deter would-be thieves.
The M6 offers a comprehensive array of active driver aids and passive safety protection that ensures all occupants are well looked after both on the road and in the event of an accident.
The Finishing Touches
The extensive levels of equipment included on the BMW M6 are as you would expect for a car at this refined level of the market.
Goodies include full leather trim, heated powered seats, sophisticated iDrive, air conditioning, massive alloys and unique tyres. There’s an excellent audio system that gives new life to even the crustiest of CD collections.
