BMW 3 Series Overview

Model Rating: 4.5
Excellent to drive
Brilliant engines
Holds value well
Very common

Sportier models a little firm

The 3 Series is available in four different body styles; as a saloon, coupe, convertible or estate (as the Touring model). There are a number of different trims and engine sizes to choose from, including the sporty M3 coupe or convertible.

The fifth generation went into production in 2005, ceasing in 2011. The sixth generation, on sale in 2012, is heavily influence by both the 7 and, more so, the 5 Series. Taking styling ideas from both cars, it will be externally recognisable. There are also a number of technological advancements first applied to the 5 and 7 Series that will feature in the 3 Series too.

The 3 Series is ideal for travelling long distances, due to its superior comfort, excellent ride quality and minimal road and engine noise. The smaller diesel engines also provide excellent fuel efficiency, with a combined fuel efficiency topping 60mpg.

This is a practical everyday car. Space isn’t an issue, the 3 series provides ample room for passengers in both the front and rear seats, and if any extra space was required, the Touring variant can provide it. Due to BMW’s excellent reputation for build quality and finishing, reliability shouldn’t be an issue, and the interior should remain top notch.

Background

The 3 Series first appeared in 1975, as the follow up to the ‘new class’ launched in 1962. Initially only sold as a two-door saloon, the second generation introduced the four body styles that are still available today in 1982. It was also the introduction of the rear-wheel drive set up that distinguishes the 3 Series from its competition in its class.

The third generation came in 1992, experiencing world-wide success. During this generation BMW introduced a 3-door version of the car, called the BMW Compact, in 1994. It featured an entirely new back end, although the front was identical to all other models.

The fourth generation first appeared in 1998 with the introduction of the new saloon. The touring and coupe models appeared the following year, before the convertible and M3 in 2000. In 2001 the Compact was again revealed, however it was quickly replaced by the 1 Series in 2004.

The fifth generation debuted for the 2006 model year as the saloon and touring models, with the coupe and hardtop convertible, which was new to the 3 Series, came the following year. The fifth generation is a major departure from the previous version, featuring a number of new innovations, including changes to engines, suspension etc. In addition the coupe and convertible body is no longer derived from the saloon model, with the M3 available as either.

Summary

The BMW 3 Series is a leader in its class. It has gained a reputation for exceptional performance, comfort and reliability, and the interior styling makes this a very desirable car to own. The high resale values are an indication of the high regard with which BMW is held.
